The most important rule in the first 48 hours after a Kids' Cut is simple: get the loose hair off your child’s scalp and neck, and keep products light so the fade stays clean and the skin stays calm. We hear it all the time, “they got me RIGHT, ” and a sharp low fade or low taper fade holds up best when you don’t smother it with gel or trap heat under a tight hat. In North Charleston, that heat and humidity can make a fresh cut feel itchier fast, so a quick rinse goes a long way.
First 24–48 hours: keep the low fade clean, cool, and untouched
Our Kids’ Cuts are quick, about 20 minutes, and we pack a lot into that time: clean lines, smooth blending, and kid-friendly pacing. The first day or two is where parents can accidentally mess up a fresh temp fade or low taper fade without meaning to.
Quick win: Use a soft towel or cape at home to brush clippings off the neck, ears, and shirt line, then do a quick lukewarm rinse if your child feels prickly.
Washing and rinsing
Gentle rinsing is fine the same day. If you want to preserve that freshly cut shape and line detail, we generally recommend waiting about 24 hours before a full shampoo, especially if your child’s hair lays best when it’s dry. When you do wash, keep it gentle. No hard nail-scrubbing on the fade area or around the lineup.
Hats, helmets, and sweaty play
Tight hats and helmets rub the edges and trap heat. If you can skip them for a day, do it. If you can’t, pick the loosest fit you’ve got and take it off as soon as you’re done. And in our Dorchester Road corridor and Ladson summers, heavy sweating can make a new cut itch more. Give your child a quick rinse after a hard play session and towel-dry well.
Styling products
Skip heavy pomades and strong gels for the first day or two. They can clog up the scalp, hold onto tiny clippings, and make the fade cut hairstyle look dull. If you need control for a photo or school day, a light water mist and a quick brush usually does the job.
The first week: keep that “freshest haircut” look without fighting your kid

Pool days, beach days, and chlorine

Hands off the hairline
Tell your child not to scratch or pick at the hairline or nape. That’s where little irritations can turn into a scab or a rough patch that makes the fade look uneven. If they’re itchy, do a quick rinse and pat dry. A clean T-shirt on the pillowcase helps too if your kid tends to sleep hot.
Bangs and cowlicks between cuts
For toddlers, bangs and cowlicks usually behave better with water than with product. Mist, comb with a wide-tooth comb, then press the hair into place for 10 to 15 seconds. If you need a little slip, a kid-safe detangling spray beats anything alcohol-based.

For daily control: water mist + soft brush or wide-tooth comb. This keeps a fade cut hairstyle looking intentional without making the scalp greasy.
For tangles: a gentle detangling spray, especially after sports or a hoodie day. Keep it off the hairline if your child breaks out easily.
For shine: go easy. A tiny amount is plenty. Heavy oils and pomades can weigh down a low fade and make it look grown out faster.
If your child got a design added on top of their cut, keep the same rules. Light product, minimal rubbing, and gentle washing. Designs also take extra time, usually about 15 minutes, so we want you leaving with something that stays sharp.
